Odigitria

The Odigitria tholos tombs are situated at the western end of the Asterousia mountains south of the Messara Plain in the south of Crete. They take their name from the Monastery nearby. The tombs were in use from EM I to MM IA. Excavation of the site was carried out by N. Dimopoulou in 1979 and by A. Vasilakis in 1980. Finds at the site included seals, pots, stone vases, amulets and necklaces, gold diadems and a gold bracelet, as well as stone blades. It was estimated that 150 burials had taken place on the site. In the rooms outside the tholoi the two separate burial layers had not been disturbed. Apart from the two tholos tombs there were rooms for offerings, an ossuary, and a paved court with altars. The tombs were in use for over 1000 years.
