Nea Roumata

The EM I tomb near the village of Nea Roumata in the county of Chania is, as far as I know, the only example of an EM I tomb to be found in West Crete, although a number of EM sites have come to light in recent years. The tomb itself is very small, so small in fact that it is difficult to imagine how a body could have been placed in the tomb in any position. Not only was a body found in the tomb, but there were two vases as well. The tholos tomb, which is reminiscent of similar tombs found in the Cyclades dating to a similar period, was constructed of rocks taken from a river bed.
