MINOAN CRETE

The aim of this web site is to provide lots of photographs and some very basic information about all the major and some of the minor archaeological sites of Bronze Age civilisation in Crete. This site is primarily aimed at those who have little knowledge of Minoan society or those who have visited Crete and would like to learn more or to look at pictures of the sites they may have visited. Teachers and students of archaeology may be interested in some of the photos of lesser known sites which may not be easily obtainable in their own countries.

For a chronology of Minoan Crete, click here and a box will open which you can minimise and restore whenever you need to refer to it as you go through the site.

To find out what is new on the site click here.

Photographs may be saved on your hard disk for personal use. Permission must be sought for any other use of photos from this site. You can email me by clicking here.

Updating Minoan Crete

In January 2008 I began a project to improve the photographs on this website. The first step was to replace many of the large photos with higher resolution versions from the original scans. However, these do not look as good as photos taken on a digital SLR camera. The second part of the project is to photograph again as many of the sites as possible using a 10 megapixel digital SLR. This will take time as a number of the sites are currently overgrown with plants and bushes. The resolution used for new photos on this site is 1280 pixels wide. To find out which sites have been re-photographed click on the link to what's new.

See Minoan Crete on Google Earth

If you have Google Earth installed on your computer you can now see many of the Minoan archaeological sites featured on this website. Click on this link to The Archaeological Sites of the Aegean Minoans on Google Community and when the page opens click on View in Google Earth. Google Earth will open with the file loaded that will take you to the Minoan sites. You can save this file in your copy of Google Earth and open it whenever you want. All you have to do is click on the link to one of the Minoan archaeological sites in the left hand panel of Google Earth and the image will zoom down onto the archaeological site.
